What this does
When the built-in items do not fit, you add your own. A new item can then be used in pay runs or assigned to employees as a recurring item.
Steps
- Go to Settings › Earnings and deductions.
- Open the tab you need and choose Add earning, Add deduction or Add benefit.
- Enter the Name. It shows on pay stubs and reports.
- Enter the Code. Use lower-case letters, digits and the underscore. The code cannot change later.
- Set the treatment boxes. See Treatment flags in plain words.
- Leave Active on.
- Save.
Examples
- A taxable gift card. Add a benefit. Leave it taxable federally, and decide whether it is paid in cash.
- A mileage allowance that is not taxed. Add an earning. Set Income tax to Not taxed, and turn off CPP/QPP and EI.
- A commission paid in hours. Add an earning, turn on Entered as hours and set a Rate multiplier.
- A parking deduction. Add a deduction. Give it an Order of 100 or more.
Good to know
- Use the Pay tab on an employee to assign a recurring item. See The Pay tab.
- A one-off amount in a pay run uses the bonus, commission, retroactive or other columns, or an imported timesheet row.
- If you are unsure how an item should be taxed, ask your accountant before the first pay. Changing it later does not change pays already made.
- A custom item you no longer need can be switched off.
