What this does
The Year-End screen starts with a readiness checklist for one tax year. It tells you what to fix before you prepare T4 slips and other returns.
Steps
- Go to Year-End.
- Pick the year at the top right: the last year or the current year.
- Read the {year} readiness checklist.
- Choose Fix, Review or Open beside any item that is not ready.
- Come back when every line is ready.
The checklist
- Employees paid. "{count} employees paid this year."
- Company details. "Company details are complete" or "Company details are missing". The details are business number, payroll program account, address, postal code and, for Quebec, the Revenu Québec identification number.
- Employees. "Every employee has a SIN and an address", or "{count} employees need a SIN or an address".
- Earnings review (PIER). "The earnings review (PIER) balances", or it names how many employees are short. See Earnings review (PIER).
- Runs. "No open runs", or "{count} runs are not approved".
- ROEs. "Every ROE is issued", or "{count} ROEs are not issued". See Records of Employment.
If the tax tables could not load, the review says it could not run.
Then
- Prepare slips. See T4 slips and the T4 return.
- Print RL-1 copies for Quebec. See RL-1 slips.
- File T4A for contractors. See T4A slips for contractors.
- Close the year. See Year-end rollover and prior years.
Good to know
- A year with no pay says "Nothing was paid in {year}."
- Read-only users can look but cannot file.
- The calendar shows the slips deadline. See The payroll calendar.
