What this does
The T4A card on the Year-End screen files fees for services (box 048) paid to contractors. It builds the slips, the summary and the XML return.
Steps
- Record contractors and their payments. See Contractors and their payments.
- Go to Year-End, pick the year and find the T4A slips card.
- Read the counts: "Slips to file: {count}", "Box 048 total: {amount}" and "Below threshold: {count} ({amount})".
- If the card says "Fix these before saving the return", correct each item. The list names the company details in Settings › Company and any contractor with a missing name, SIN, business number or address.
- When it says "Ready to file", choose Save XML.
- Upload the XML to CRA. The message says "Upload it to CRA, then record the submission here."
- Choose Record submission. Enter the Date submitted and the CRA confirmation number.
- Choose Print slips for recipient copies and Summary PDF for the summary.
The $500 rule
A contractor paid $500 or less in fees is listed as "Below threshold" and is left off the slips and the summary. The return lists them, but they are not filed.
The check before saving
The return is checked against CRA's schema (T619_T4A.xsd). If it would be rejected, the message says "The return would be rejected. Fix the issues listed and try again."
Saved returns
Under Saved returns, each line shows the type, slips, amount and either "Submitted {date} {confirmation}" or "Not yet submitted".
Good to know
- The XML is not available under a trial licence.
- Recipient copies show the SIN with only the last three digits.
- The app builds original returns from the screen. Amended and cancelled returns are not on a screen.
