What this does
The setup wizard creates a new company as one encrypted file on your computer. It collects your business details, payroll accounts, locations and pay groups, then protects the file with a password.
Steps
- On the Welcome screen choose Create a company. Or open the company switcher at the top of the left menu and choose New company.
- Business. Enter the Legal name, Operating name, Province of main establishment, address, Payroll contact, Usual pay frequency and Fiscal year starts in.
- CRA. Enter the Business number (9 digits), the Payroll account RP reference (for example 0001) and the Remitter type. Add more accounts if you remit under several.
- Revenu Québec. Needed only if an employee works in Quebec. Enter the Identification number (10 digits), File number and Transmitter number. Or choose No employees work in Quebec. You can add these later.
- Locations. Add each place employees report to work. The province of the location decides tax, CPP or QPP, EI or QPIP and employment standards. Add the WCB account and employer health tax details if they apply.
- Pay groups. Add a group for each pay schedule: Pay frequency, First period ends and Pay date, days after period end. The wizard shows the first period and pay date.
- Accounting. Mapping to your general ledger can wait. See Chart of accounts and mapping.
- File and password. Choose where to Save the company file to and set a Password (twice).
- Recovery key. The key is shown once. Choose Save as a text file, or copy it, then tick I have saved the recovery key somewhere safe.
- First employee. Choose Add an employee now, or Go to the dashboard.
Good to know
- The password needs at least 10 characters and no spaces at the start or end. Mix letters with numbers or symbols, or use 16 characters or more.
- A new file is placed in the app's Companies folder unless you change it with Change….
- If you leave the wizard half done, a draft is kept. See Drafts and "Resume where you left off".
- Every step can be changed later in Settings.
- The file name must not already exist in that folder.
