What this does
A licence allows a set number of computers, called seats. Each computer that activates the licence uses one seat. You can free a seat when you stop using a computer.
See your computers
- Go to Settings › Account.
- Look under Computers. Each row shows the computer, "Last seen" and a mark for This computer.
- The count reads like "2 of 3 computers".
The same count is in Settings › Licence under Computers: "2 of 3 in use".
Free a seat
From another computer or the web account:
- Go to Settings › Account.
- Find the computer you no longer use.
- Choose Deactivate. The seat is free.
From the computer itself:
- Go to Settings › Licence.
- Choose Remove key from this device. The app tells the licence service first, then clears the key.
If the seats are full
Activating on one more computer is refused with a message such as "This key is already in use on 3 computers", followed by the computer names. Deactivate one, then choose Check in now in Settings › Licence.
If a seat was freed while a computer was offline, that computer will ask again at its next check-in. If a seat is free, it succeeds. If not, it opens read-only with the reason.
Good to know
- A trial key belongs to the one computer that started it.
- Pasting a different key on a computer frees the old key's seat on that computer.
- You can use SeroPayroll on the browser edition too. It counts as a computer for the browser profile.
- Over the limit, you can still open, view, print, export and back up.
