Getting started

The dashboard

The company's payroll at a glance: figures across the top, charts and lists in cards you can arrange, hide and resize.

What this does

The dashboard is the first screen after you open a company. Across the top is a row of figures; under it are cards with charts and lists. You choose which cards show, in what order and how wide.

The figures across the top

  • Company. The open company and how many companies this device has.
  • Active employees. Everyone not terminated, with how many were hired and how many left this year.
  • Last pay, gross. The gross of the latest approved pay, with its net and pay date. A reversed run and its reversal are left out.
  • Next pay run. The next pay date across your pay groups, and about how much it will be (the gross of that group's last regular run).
  • Remittances due. What is open, in total. Overdue ones are counted in red; "nothing overdue" shows in green.
  • Payroll cost this year. Gross plus employer costs since 1 January, with the gross alone underneath.

Choose a figure to open the screen behind it. On a phone, swipe the row sideways.

The cards

  • Payroll cost by pay run. A line through the last 12 approved runs (gross plus employer costs). Where the same pay group paid a run about a year earlier, it shows as a faint dashed line. Point at or tap a run to see its date and amount.
  • Deductions, last pay run. CPP or QPP, EI or QPIP, income tax and other deductions, as bars with their amounts and the total.
  • Remittances due. One bar split into not due yet, due within 7 days and overdue, then each open remittance with its due date. Overdue lines are red. Choose one to open it.
  • Needs attention. Overdue remittances, runs awaiting approval, draft runs, employees held from a run, employees without a SIN or a signed TD1, to-dos due, a licence that needs action and tax tables that need a look. Choose a line to go there. The licence status and the tax tables edition are always shown at the bottom.
  • Payroll cost by department. Bars for the period chosen at the top. Employees with no department have a bar of their own.
  • Headcount. Active employees by pay group or by location.
  • Top earners by gross. The five highest gross pays in the period. Only the Admin and Payroll roles see this card.
  • Recent activity. The last ten entries in the audit log: what changed, who did it and when.
  • Pay runs awaiting action, Next pay dates and To-dos due, as before.
  • Payroll reminders, Payroll health and Data quality, when those features are on.

The period buttons (30 days, 90 days, Year to date, Last year) set the range for the department and top earners cards. The choice is kept on this device.

The figures are read when the dashboard opens and again a moment after anything in the company file changes.

Arrange the cards

  1. Choose Arrange.
  2. On each card: drag the handle beside its title onto another card to put it there, or use the arrows. Choose 1, 2 or 3 to set how many columns it spans on a desktop. Choose the eye to hide it.
  3. Hidden cards wait in the bar at the top; choose one to bring it back.
  4. Choose Reset to default to start over, then Done arranging.

The layout is saved on this device, not in the company file, so each computer can have its own. A tablet shows two columns and a phone one, whatever the widths.

Theme colour and appearance

Settings › Theme colour picks the same colour themes as SeroBooks, and Appearance picks light, dark or the system's choice. Both are kept on this device.

Good to know

  • With no company open, the dashboard says to open or create one.
  • Charts have a text description for screen readers, and each bar has its own label and tooltip.
  • With reduced motion turned on in the system, nothing animates.
  • Deadlines for slips and Records of Employment are on the payroll calendar. See The payroll calendar.
